On Christmas Eve I walked from Trianglen to my office, near Sankt Hans Torv. The short ascension got me thinking about something that troubles me in recent architecture in Denmark. Namely, the disappearance of the structure. Or more precisely, the divorce between structure, façade, volume and space.

I’m experiencing lately a curious phenomenon. If a building, a landscape, a place, appeals to my sensibility, if I find it interesting or beautiful, you can be sure that there is a plan somewhere to destroy it, change it, substitute it. A most peculiar version of the Midas curse or the lethal gaze of Hydra.

Immigration is setting Europe in a defensive mode, a state of mind that politically ranges from reluctance to paying lip service to universal solidarity. At the same time, we architects, and not only in Denmark, are busy again with questions of national identity and cultural legacy. Within academia and other architecture institutions, eyes are turning inwards to examine, for instance, all things "Nordic". There are seminars galore on Nordic urbanism, or for example, on the possibility of a Nordic high-rise.
